BS 7671 Amendment 4 Changes Checker: What to Learn First

BS 7671:2018+A4:2026 is not a topic you revise by reading random blog summaries. It is an open-book navigation problem: can you find the changed topic fast enough, in the current book, under exam pressure?

BS 7671:2018+A4:2026 is not a topic you revise by reading random blog summaries. It is an open-book navigation problem: can you find the changed topic fast enough, in the current book, under exam pressure?

The IET and BSI announced Amendment 4 in January 2026 and described it as an essential update to the IET Wiring Regulations. Start with the official IET source:

This page is an independent study aid. It is not official IET, BSI, City & Guilds, NICEIC or EAL material, and it does not reproduce protected regulation text.

The real problem: finding, not memorising

For many candidates, the issue is not "have I heard of Amendment 4?" It is:

  • which sections changed;
  • where the new material sits;
  • how to tab the book;
  • how to avoid wasting 90 seconds on the wrong Part;
  • how to recognise the topic when the question wording is indirect.

That is why a useful changes checker should be a navigation aid, not a copied list of clauses.

The topic clusters to map first

Use this as a study map. Verify every technical point against your current copy of BS 7671 and your training provider's syllabus.

| Topic cluster | Why it matters for navigation | |---|---| | Battery storage | Newer installation patterns create new search paths and terminology. | | Energy efficiency | Candidates need to know where energy-efficiency material sits and how it is referenced. | | ICT / functional earthing | Easy to lose time if you search under the wrong older mental label. | | Power over Ethernet | A newer special-location style topic that needs a fast route in the book. | | Medical locations | Changed/reworked material can be slow to locate if you rely on old tabs. | | AFDDs and protective devices | Commonly discussed, but exam navigation still depends on the exact section. |

Do not treat this table as a substitute for the book. Treat it as a list of areas to tab and drill.

How to build your own changes checker

You can create a simple spreadsheet with four columns:

  1. Old mental label or topic.
  2. Current A4 location.
  3. Trigger words likely to appear in a question.
  4. Practice result: found in under 45 seconds, yes/no.

The last column is the important one. If you cannot find it quickly, you do not know it for an open-book exam.

A 30-minute drill

Run this three times a week:

  1. Pick ten Amendment 4 topics.
  2. Hide your notes.
  3. Start a timer.
  4. Find each topic in the current book.
  5. Record the time and the wrong turns.
  6. Retab only where the wrong turn repeats.

That turns "I read a summary" into actual exam behaviour.

Where the Speed-Index fits

The free BS 7671 diagnostic gives you a quick read on whether your issue is book navigation, topic recognition or revision structure.

The paid BS 7671 A4 Open-Book Navigation Pack gives you the open-book navigation workflow and practice aids for GBP 17 one-time. It is deliberately small: a speed-index and navigation routine, not another generic mock-exam bank.

FAQ

Is this an official BS 7671 Amendment 4 checker? No. It is independent revision support and does not reproduce the regulations. Use your official book and training-provider material as the authority.

Should I memorise the changed clauses? For an open-book assessment, fast location and correct interpretation matter more than rote memorisation. Know the route through the book.

Can I use old Amendment 2 tabs? You should review and update tabs against your current A4 copy. Old tabs can send you to the wrong place or create false confidence.

Does the pack guarantee an exam pass? No. It is a navigation aid and practice structure. No exam, certification, employment or regulatory outcome is promised.

Bottom line

Amendment 4 revision should be practical. Build a map, drill the routes, and measure whether you can find the changed topics quickly in the book you will actually use.
