The trap nobody warns you about

"It's open book, so the book will save me." That sentence catches more electricians than anything else.

City & Guilds says 2382-26 is the latest Amendment 4 version and centres must use it from 16 April 2026. The IET describes Amendment 4 as a current update to BS 7671:2018. That means old notes and old tabs need checking against the current book.

The practical problem is simple: timed open-book work rewards quick routing. You need a repeatable way to decide where to look, confirm the relevant location, and move on.

1

The clock, not the content. Years on the tools doesn't help when each lookup costs you a minute you don't have.

2

Old muscle memory. If you trained on the Amendment 2/3 book, your instinct points at the wrong page.

3

The new A4 content. Energy storage, prosumer installs, EV open-PEN, ICT earthing — brand-new places to get lost.

The method

Turn open-book navigation into a repeatable study workflow.

This is not the qualification and it does not replace studying the standard. It gives you a structured workflow for locating material in your own copy.

1 · The Speed-Index Navigator

Type "RCD", "battery storage", "open-PEN", "Zs", "bonding"… and instantly get the exact Part / Chapter / Section / Regulation / Appendix / Table to open in your own book. 70+ locators, with the A4 hotspots flagged. Practise until the locations are reflex.

2 · The 90-second Locator Drill

Realistic exam-style prompts against a timer. Your job isn't to answer — it's to say where you'd look before time runs out. It tracks your average lookup time so you can compare it with your own timing target before exam day.

3 · The physical setup

A Tab Planner that prints a colour-coded cutting guide, a printable navigation index, and an A3 → A4 diff so your tabs point at the new locations — not where things used to be.

What you get

A working tool and a complete prep pack — not a PDF of mock questions.

Straight answers

Questions, answered honestly.

Is this the qualification or official City & Guilds material?

No. This is an independent, unofficial study aid. It is not affiliated with the IET, BSI, City & Guilds, EAL or NICEIC, and it is not the exam or the qualification. It's a tool to make you faster at navigating your own copy of the standard. Book the actual 2382-26 through an accredited provider.

Does it contain the regulation text?

Deliberately not. BS 7671 is BSI/IET copyright. This pack contains no reproduced regulation text — it indexes publicly-known regulation numbers, section titles and locations so you can find things in your own book faster. That's also why it works: the skill is reading the real standard quickly, not memorising a paraphrase.

Do I still need to study the standard?

Yes — and you should. This solves the speed problem, not the knowledge problem. It's designed to sit alongside your own current copy of BS 7671:2018+A4:2026 and whatever course or revision you're doing.

I trained on the older book. Is this useful?

Especially then. The A3 → A4 diff exists precisely so your old muscle memory doesn't send you to the wrong page — it shows what moved, what's new (energy storage, prosumer, EV open-PEN, ICT earthing) and what to re-verify.

Will the section numbers be exactly right?

Amendment 4 renumbers things, so some locators are given as a strong pointer ("around 730", "722.411 area") that you confirm in your own copy. The pack is explicit about this and tells you to verify. The durable skill is the navigation habit, not memorising a number BSI might move.

How is it delivered, and does it need internet?

Instant download after checkout. The Navigator is a self-contained web app — open index.html in any browser and it runs fully offline. Nothing you type is ever uploaded.

What if it doesn't help me?
